Luther P. Jackson Black Cultural Center

Sponsored Programs

The Luther Porter Jackson Black Cultural Center is committed to enriching the University experience for all students.  The Center consistently highlights Black contributions to the development of our unique residential experience here at the University. One aspect of this commitment involves strategic sponsorship of and collaboration with student run organizations throughout the University. Specifically, the LPJBCC is intent upon culturally enriching student leadership, learning, mentoring, and community building.

As for organizations, the University of Virginia’s commitment to student self-governance allows for infinite configurations of special interests and social groups. The University’s capacity to help students create opportunities to gather around common themes is unmatched by many other Universities. However, with this capacity comes the unintended outcome of sometimes creating small pockets of students who share ambitions, goals, and interests, BUT not CIO membership.

As an office, we are very aware of this unintended outcome. As such, each of the sponsored programs in LPJBCC is available to all students, all organizations, and are flexible in that they can be molded to meet the needs of many.  Within the Black Cultural Center, there is a project for ALL Black Men, for ALL Black women, and ALL Black Leaders.  The projects reflect the unique experiences of Black women and men at the University and the shared experiences of Black leaders.
