Our Mission

The Grad-STAR Program in the Office of African American Affairs is committed to developing and sustaining a successful academic climate in which students can achieve their highest potential through scholarship, stewardship, and service. 

What is GradSTAR?

GradSTAR is an OAAA initiative to support African American students’ academic excellence and to promote students’ personal growth and involvement in all UVa activities and programs.

GradSTAR helps African American students create opportunities to gain knowledge and skills to succeed in a global society.

GradSTAR advising prepares students for:

• Research experiencevic
• Civic engagement/serivce
• Clinical/career exposure (esp. for students in pre-professional majors of study
• Cultural enrichment opportunities (including Semester-at-Sea and Study Abroad)
