A Moment in Black History

Did you know? Tank and the Bangas is an American musical group based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band consist of the main members: Tarriona "Tank" Ball – lead vocals, Joshua Johnson – drums, musical director, Norman Spence II – bass, keyboards, guitar, and Albert Allenback – alto saxophone, flute. The band won the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest and in November 2019, they were nominated in the Best New Artist category for the 2020 Grammy Awards. They have released three studio albums, Thinktank (2013), Green Balloon (2019), and Red Balloon (2022). Members of Tank and the Bangas
met at a New Orleans open mic show called Liberation Lounge at now-closed Blackstar Cafe and Books in the Algiers section of New Orleans and formed the group in 2011. They are a fusion of a variety of genres they identify with, including rock, folk, gospel. Tarriona’s voice can be heard all over Instagram and TikTok with her poem “This boy be in my DM say I’m pretty.”

Harry Belafonte, born Harold George Belafonte, Jr., (March 1, 1927) is a singer, actor, producer, and activist who was a key figure in the folk music scene of the 1950s, especially known for popularizing the Caribbean folk songs known as calypsos.

Let’s celebrate coming to end of your second year, that time when you determine your pathway to graduation.

The deadline for declaring your major or minor is May 2nd, but we at OAAA know that you have been thinking about this important decision for a while now. We will gather on the Lawn of LPJ to celebrate your choice, and to see what your peers have decided as well. There will be food, photos, games, raffles and giveaways, all to acknowledge this most important step in your academic journey.
