The Z Society Gilbert J. Sullivan Internship Scholarship Application

Each year, U.Va. students must turn down valuable internship opportunities because of financial constraints. Recognizing the importance of experiential learning and many of its associated high costs, the Z Society has endowed this internship scholarship, named in honor of past U. Va. Alumni Association Director Gilbert (“Gilly”) Sullivan.

The Gilbert J. Sullivan Scholarship awards $3,711 to a returning University undergraduate student. The scholarship intends to provide an opportunity for students to take a summer internship otherwise unattainable because of financial constraints. Priority will be given to applicants with a demonstrated financial need. Students should apply regardless of their citizenship status. We encourage those from marginalized communities and intersections of identity to apply.

Applications are due by 11:37pm on Sunday, April 7th, 2024. All materials should be emailed to [email protected] as one PDF. Please use “Sullivan Award 2023 Application – FirstNameLastName” as the subject line of the email submission and PDF. If you do not receive an email confirming your submission by two days after the deadline, please email [email protected] to ensure your application was received. Decisions will be announced within two weeks of the application deadline.

Complete Application can be found here.

OAAA Alumni Engagement: Kyndia Riley

Kyndia Riley

Major: Anthropology and a Master’s in Education.

Occupation: Spanish-English Dual Immersion Kindergarten teacher in Laurel, Maryland.

Wisdom/Advice: As I’ve ventured into life, my two main pieces of advice that I would give is: 1) Change is absolutely inevitable. Go with the flow and do what serves you and your mental best, and 2) Home is where you decide home will be. Don’t be afraid to explore and navigate the world around you to see where you fit best.

Favorite OAAA memoryWhile at UVA, the large population could be intimidating at times. There were thousands of strangers walking past, riding buses and enduring class. Often, one could feel lost and unknown, but I never felt that way at OAAA! They were literally a home away from home. From sitting in the front office and chatting with the office staff, planning my life with the deans or dancing outside during Black Friday while munching on fried chicken from Mel’s- I knew that I was seen, heard, loved and valued. Everyone there was family.
