OAAA Alumni Engagement

Name: Malik Phillips

Hometown: Franklin, Virginia

Year of Graduation: 2019/2021

Major: African and African American Studies/Master of Public Health

Occupation: I am in my second year of doctoral studies at VCU in their School of Population Health.

Advice: I would advise any students at UVA to use the Office of African-American Affairs and their connections to alumni. Attending UVA can be challenging, but OAAA provided a space where we could bond with other students and staff. Always remember that you were accepted to the university based on merit, and you are MORE than deserving to be on Grounds.

Favorite Memory: Some of my best memories and laughs happened in the OAAA library, where we were able to share our stories and frustrations.

Student Spotlight: Jaiden Murray

Jaiden Murray is a 2nd year in the College of Arts and Sciences from Richmond, Virginia. At UVA, she is planning on double majoring in Global Public Health and African-American/African Studies. She is dedicated to serving the UVA and the Charlottesville community. She serves as the Black Student Alliance’s Membership Co-Chair, on the Virginia Ambassadors DOTL Committee and Center for Global Health Equity, Student Advisory Board Special Events Committee, and a member of the Daniel H. Williams Pre-Health Honor Society. She also serves as a mentor for W.O.C.H.A for students at local high schools to help with college prep. After graduating, Jaiden plans to attend Medical School and become a dermatologist to help improve patient care in a field that lacks representation of physicians of color

Schedule a Meeting with a Dean

In addition to the cultural programs we host, each Dean is available to meet with students to provide one-on-one support (i.e., academic, social, and emotional) to all our students.

Quote of the Week

“Freedom is not something that one people can bestow on another as a gift. Thy claim it as their own and none can keep it from them.” —Kwame Nkrumah
Francis Kwame Nkrumah (September 21, 1909 –April 27, 1972) was a Ghanaian politician, political theorist, and revolutionary. He was the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana, having led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957.

Studying 101: Study Smarter Not Harder Vol. 14 11.28.23

Remember maintaining your Black Excellence is a constant process.

NO THANKSGIVNG SLUMPS!

Returning from the holiday break can be one of two things…a reminder that you are almost to the finish line or a reminder that you have so much yet to accomplish. Either one to get there you must set your mind on the long-term outcomes. If you study now and continue the progress you have made you will continue to be successful. If you rested too much and lack a bit of motivation then you may need to take some time and meet with one of your deans. Again, the end is near and you will have an entire month to recalibrate before preparing for your spring courses. So don’t stop now we are rooting for you! One more full week of classes and the semester end is in site! Let’s enjoy the “Lighting of the lawn” and the ‘Hoo-liday refresh’ together to celebrate making it through the fall semester.

Your progress is our SUCCESS

National African American Historic Landmarks

Motown Museum, Detroit, MI - Some of the most iconic music in U.S. history, appropriately called “the sound of young America,” was created in the small brick house that shelters the Motown Museum. A journey through the recording studio combined with collected costumes and photos, narrates the story of the iconic Black record label.

Improving vocabulary is a valuable skill that can benefit communication, reading, and writing. Here is one practical way to enhance one's vocabulary:

Play word games: Engage in activities like crossword puzzles, Scrabble, or word-building mobile apps to challenge and expand one's vocabulary.

Word of the Week:

eponym
noun [ep·onym]

-  the person after whom something is named or believed to be named, like a street, discovery or theory

Remember, building vocabulary is a gradual process, so be patient and consistent in putting forth the effort.

Interested in Joining OSAC?

Outreach Student Admission Committee (OSAC) volunteers play a vital role in the way we engage and connect with prospective students. Events take place in both virtual and in-person formats. It is very important that the UVA's Office of Undergraduate Admission continues to reach out and connect with prospective students as they decide where they would like to go to college. We couldn't do it without your help! Do not hesitate to reach out to the Outreach team Alex Cook. We look forward to being in touch with each of you soon. For More Information.
