Year of Graduation: 2018
Major: Double Major in English & African American Studies

Wisdom: College is a special time in your life that goes by really fast, so take the time to make the best memories, enjoy your friendships, and discover who you are. Grades are important, but you’re going to change your mind about what your career will be so many times. There’s still time to figure it all out!
Favorite Memory: I loved working at OAAA and being able to see my friends who came to study every day.
Quote of the Week
Studying 101: Study Smarter Not Harder Vol. 14 10.24.23
I have been trying to study but it’s just not working!”
“Every time I get ready to start something I get distracted!”
“I don’t have time to study, I have so much to do!”
Do any of these statements sound familiar to you? Maybe you are having these same thoughts on how you have been feeling as you struggle to achieve focus in your study sessions. However, you are not alone. The common experience we all have is that when you sit down to focus on studying for your classes, the last thing that actually occurs is focus. Instead, the mind is constantly bombarded with numerous distractions. By contrast, only a minority of successful students are able to achieve focus (Phillips, 2015). So how do you separate yourself from the majority?
Let’s explore how to remain focused when studying for success. Remember maintaining your BLACK EXECELLENCE is a constant process.
Your progress is our success.”
Dean Kelly Smith
FIVE ways to go from an average student to a SUCCESSFUL student
1. Offload on paper: the working memory only holds 5-7 things at one time. If you have a million thoughts buzzing through your head, your ability to retain the information or what you are learning is impaired. Successful students protect their executive memory by offloading important thoughts onto paper, this frees your executive memory to focus entirely on your studying efforts.
These are 5 things to consider as you elevate your black excellence from an average student to a successful student. I hope these tips are helpful as you work through the ladder half of the semester. Your commitment to your success begins with you and we are happy to support you along the way!
Have a blessed and productive week!
Dear OAAA Family & Friends,
I would like to give a special shoutout to NAACP & NPHC for hosting and last week’s Black Friday. Even with a little rain, we still have a great time! This semester has been moving quickly and I can’t believe we only have few more Black Friday events left in the semester so please make sure to come out!
Jeffery C. Smith, II
Assistant Dean

Interested in Joining OSAC?
Outreach Student Admission Committee (OSAC) volunteers play a vital role in the way we engage and connect with prospective students. Events take place in both virtual and in-person formats. It is very important that the UVA's Office of Undergraduate Admission continues to reach out and connect with prospective students as they decide where they would like to go to college. We couldn't do it without your help! Do not hesitate to reach out to the Outreach team Alex Cook. We look forward to being in touch with each of you soon. For More Information.
