  • The Donning of the Kente Graduation Ceremony is a special event hosted by the Office of African-American Affairs to honor and celebrate the academic achievements of graduating undergraduate students. It includes the presentation of Kente Graduation Stoles to participants.

2. Who is eligible to participate in the ceremony?

  • All Black graduating undergraduate students at the University of Virginia are eligible to participate in the Donning of the Kente Graduation Ceremony.

3. What is the significance of the Kente Graduation Stole?

  • The Kente Graduation Stole symbolizes the academic accomplishments and cultural heritage of the graduating students. It is a traditional cloth originating from Ghana and is worn during ceremonial events to mark moments of significance.

4. How can I RSVP for the ceremony?

  • To secure your spot in this memorable event, kindly RSVP by Friday, April 19, 2024. Due to limited space, this is a first-come, first-served event, so early RSVPs are encouraged.

5. Is there a cost to participate in the ceremony?

  • Yes, typically there is a cost to participate in the ceremony. However, we are pleased to announce that the fee will be waived for the 2024 Donning of the Kente Ceremony.

6. Can family members and guests attend the ceremony?

  • Yes, family members and guests are welcome to attend the ceremony. However, due to limited space, each student may be initially offered a set number of tickets. Additional tickets may be available based on availability. However, we will also be providing a limited number of Remote Viewing Tickets that will be available on a "first come, first served" basis.

7. Will there be accommodations for guests with special needs?

  • Yes, accommodations will be made for guests with special needs. Please notify us in advance if you or any of your guests require special accommodations so that we can make appropriate arrangements.

8. What should I wear to the ceremony?

  • Wear your graduation cap and gown, no additional cords or stoles.

9. How long is the ceremony?

  • The duration of the ceremony may vary. Guests are advised to arrive on time to ensure they don't miss any part of the event.

10. Can I submit a speech for consideration to be delivered during the ceremony?

  • Yes, graduating students will have the opportunity to submit a Tribute Speech for consideration to be delivered during the ceremony. Details about speech submission guidelines and deadlines will be provided separately.
