Spotlight: Hashim Davis, Assistant Dean and Director of the Luther Porter Jackson (LPJ) Black Cultural Center
Hashim comes to us from Albemarle County High School, where he taught AP US History, African American Studies, Advanced VA/US History, Holocaust and Genocide, and Government. He holds a Bachelor of Science in History and Political Science from Virginia Union University and a Master in Secondary History Education from the University of Mary Washington.
His professional experience includes an impressive harmonization of teaching, advising, and counseling students through culturally responsive teaching. In addition, Hashim has received several teaching fellowships in the area of Holocaust and Genocide, including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights (TOLI); Echoes & Reflections, Yad Vashem; Defiant Requiem Schachter Fellow, The Jewish Community Relations Council (UCRC), Minnesota & The Dakotas Fellow. Hashim was also a 2020 Golden Apple Teacher of the Year for Albemarle County. Hashim has been a part of OAAA’s Black Male Initiative (BMI) since 2012 and has served as the advisor. While serving in this capacity, BMI hosted book club meetings, regular body meetings, and the Conversation in the Commonwealth. Additionally, Hashim has experience advising student organizations at the high school and collegiate levels and supporting the development of student leaders.
As Assistant Dean and Director of the LPJ Black Cultural Center, Hashim will support the broad programs and services of the center and primarily be responsible for academic advising, mentoring, and liaison support services to a cohort of students. He is a true team player and an excellent asset to the Division of Student Affairs. Hashim officially joined the team on January 8, 2024, and his office is in Dawson’s Row #3. We are thrilled to welcome him to the team!

The full schedule is attached and also available here. Getting Started in Undergraduate Research sessions and Exploring Opportunities at UVA & Beyond workshops occur about once a month. Many sessions this spring are dedicated to those fellowships that have a deadline in the fall. It is important that students start considering those opportunities early so that they can take advantage of our spring and summer advising to be well prepared.
Black Graduate Students Support Group
Every Friday – 3:00 pm-4:30 pm – Student Health & Wellness
This is a weekly support space centered on the Black, African American, and African graduate and professional student experience. This support space provides a safe and affirming opportunity to make connections, give and receive support, and engage in open dialogue about lived experiences as a graduate or professional student at a PWI. Physician Assistant/Associate Application Meeting 2024

Join the Pre-Health Advisors for an overview on how to successfully navigate the physician assistant/associate application process. We are currently looking for: Committed, Focused, Professional Undergraduate students with strong academic records and a willingness to commit a minimum of 2 years to the program, inclusive of training. Dedicated undergraduate students that understand and will comply with the fact that minimum hours and training sessions are not optional and understand the importance of being team members obligated to support clinical operations in person in the Emergency Department.
Harrison Undergraduate Research Award
Application Deadline: Wednesday, January 24
The Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards fund outstanding undergraduate research projects annually. Current first-, second-, and third-year undergraduates can propose substantial and significant research projects under the supervision of a UVA faculty mentor to be carried out in the summer following application for the award. Proposals from all subject areas and schools at the university are welcome. Awardees may be granted a summertime stipend of up to $5,000. For More Information

GeorgeSquared (G2) Post-Bac Information Sessions

GeorgeSquared (Advanced Biomedical Sciences) is a collaboration between George Mason and Georgetown Universities that offers a nine-month pre-health preparatory, graduate-level program designed to help qualify students for medical, dental, or other health professional schools. University Undergraduate Award for Arts Projects
Application Deadline: Wednesday, February 7
The University Undergraduate Award for Arts Projects expands opportunities for creative inquiry for first-, second-, and third-year undergraduates across all majors. Applicants can propose a substantial and significant project of creative work under the supervision of a UVA faculty mentor to be carried out the summer following the application of the award. The Oculus, U.Va.'s largest multidisciplinary research journal
Submissions Deadline: Sunday, February 11
The Oculus accepts DMP or major theses, Course Papers, Independent Research, and more. Research from any field, from Biology to Art History, is accepted. Fill out this form to submit your research! Virginia College Advising Corps
Priority Application Deadline: Friday, February 16
Looking for a fun, rewarding, and dynamic public service position after graduation? The Virginia College Advising Corps (VCAC) may be right for you! VCAC hires recent college graduates to serve as college advisers in high schools throughout the Commonwealth to increase the number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students who enter and complete higher education. Benefits of being a VCAC college adviser include a compensation package, including a living stipend, health insurance, and an Education Award; funding for campus tours, events, and college/career readiness projects; fully funded travel for national and statewide conferences; guidance and support with career and graduate school goals, a large network of College Advising Corps and AmeriCorps alumni; and being part of a mission-driven community of recent college graduates. UVA Alumni Association Scholarships

The spring scholarship cycle is now open, featuring a wide variety of scholarships ranging from small stipends to full scholarships covering tuition and fees. Decisions are made on a rolling basis, with most scholarships awarded by April 30. Winners will see scholarship amounts applied to their accounts for the academic year 2024-2025. Glenn D. Kirwin Scholarship

Amount: In-state tuition and fees - 2nd and 3rd year students who exhibit qualities of leadership, determination, generosity, and wisdom, and who demonstrate a passion for entrepreneurship.
R. H. Melton First Amendment Scholarship

Amount: $4,000 - 2nd and 3rd year students engaged in debating, student-run journalism, or the study of politics.
Jade Song Memorial Scholarship
Applications Due by Friday, March 1
Amount: $3,000 (2 scholarships available) - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year students who have overcome adversity and demonstrate strong ties to their cultural backgrounds.
Peter C. Gillcrist Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $10,000 - Rising 4th-year engineering students who exemplify qualities of servant leadership, good character, integrity, community service, and loyalty to friends.
Greer Family Scholarship
Applications Due by Sunday, March 3
Amount: $16,000/year - 1st-year students from rural or underprivileged areas of Virginia who strive to use their education to better serve their communities. Renewable for up to 3 years for a total award of $48,000.
Diversity Programs Office Professional Development Award

The Professional Development Award supports graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at UVA by providing funds for activities related to their career development for which funds may not exist. For More Information.
