Studying 101: Study Smarter Not Harder Vol. 14 11.21.23 Thanksgiving Break
The holidays are upon us and you want to enjoy family friends and maybe some football too! All these things are great; however, you made a study plan and now you are struggling to prioritize! It is okay to fully enjoy this break. Remember although these final weeks are coming fast…time is one thing you do not get back. So, add some time for yourself, family and friends but also take an opportunity to open a book or some notes as well. Again, school will be here when you return, and your accountability buddies will keep you on track as well. So, enjoy food and family and maybe that community turkey trot and reward yourself with a study session or two. Breaks are important in digesting the material you’ve acquired throughout the entire semester.

DON’T Stress if you can’t stick to your study plan.

It is not the end of the world if you miss a study session or 2 or more, there’s a good chance you will but don’t feel guilty about it. It happens to everyone whether it’s a holiday or not and that is OK! Just enjoy the time you have with your loved ones and focus on being productive when you do get back into your study routine.

Remember maintaining your BLACK EXECELLENCE is a constant process.

Your progress is our success”

OAAA Alumni Engagement

Name: Sherese Bonner

Hometown: New Kent, VA

Year of Graduation: 2021

Major: Public Policy and Leadership

Occupation: Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of Commerce

Advice: My advice to current students is to ensure that you are leveraging the resources you have at the university early and often. Be involved as much as you can in career-oriented activities whether it be hosted by the Office of African American Affairs or the UVA Career Center. If you get stuck or frustrated, don’t be afraid to lean on these resources. As former Associate Dean of OAAA, Patrice Grimes, wisely told me you cannot forget your purpose and reasoning for being at UVA which is to set yourself up for the best possible career opportunities.

Favorite memory: By far my favorite memory from OAAA was spending time with friends on Black Fridays!

Did you know? Pam Johnson became publisher at the Ithaca Journal in 1981. This accomplishment made her the first African-American woman to be named publisher of a general circulation newspaper in the United States. As president and publisher of the daily, Johnson oversaw the entire operation at the Ithaca Journal. Under her leadership, the Journal was one of the most well-respected small-town newspapers in the country, featuring a clean design and increased coverage of the local African-American community. Johnson’s poise and dedication made her an inspiration for black women and journalists across the country.

Interested in Joining OSAC?

Outreach Student Admission Committee (OSAC) volunteers play a vital role in the way we engage and connect with prospective students. Events take place in both virtual and in-person formats. It is very important that the UVA's Office of Undergraduate Admission continues to reach out and connect with prospective students as they decide where they would like to go to college. We couldn't do it without your help! Do not hesitate to reach out to the Outreach team Alex Cook. We look forward to being in touch with each of you soon. For More Information.
